Description

Homid: ~A smooth face and a congenial smile mark the approach of this Chinese youth. Qu appears to be in his late teens or early twenties; it’s difficult to tell because the young man wears more maturity than others his age. Black hair is combed carefully and worn with sweeping bangs that drape over one side of the face. Keen brown eyes are alight with vigor and thoughtfulness as Qu gazes over the world. Qu will usually be seen in black corduroy slacks, simple shoes, and a red shirt of some sort. He likes the short-sleeved button-up’s the most. Qu also boasts a gold wedding band on his right hand and a deep-red ruby is affixed to the ring. Qu hums as he jogs up and checks out the scene.~

OOC: Appearance 3; Pure Breed 2; Glory 5, Virtue 6, Wisdom 7

Glabro: ~Unlike many hengeyokai, Qu assumes a physically-intimidating shape in this near-man form. Yet his voice remains sooth and calm, his face smooth, and his bearing restrained and quiet. His mass nevertheless doubles, arms and legs and chest and shoulders all beefing up. His hair grows a few inches longer, and his warm eyes grow further wild.~

OOC: Appearance 3; Pure Breed 2; Fair Glabro; Glory 5, Virtue 6, Wisdom 7

Crinos: ~In this monstrous war-form, Qu puts aside his desire for peace and readies for war. Several hundred pounds of sinew and rough gray fur marks the beastly werewolf. Paws lengthening with meat-tearing claws clench and unclench as the lupine biped advances. A wolf’s head that bears a pair of Rage-enflamed eyes and a gnashing, fanged snout sends many prey screaming. Even so, there is a sense of withdrawal that helps would-be prey feel more at ease around this Child of Gaia. The Beast is poised to strike, but it’s felt deep inside that it would take much more to provoke Qu’s wrath.~

OOC: Appearance 0; Pure Breed 2; Glory 5, Virtue 6, Wisdom 7; Delirium: Weakened Veil

Hispo: ~A five hundred pound terror on four legs, this dire wolf reflection lopes forward. A terrible maw snaps with anticipation of the hunt and the dark gray fur bristles with instinct. There is only the predator in Qu’s eyes when he assumes this dreadful form.~

OOC: Appearance 0; Pure Breed 2; Glory 5, Virtue 6, Wisdom 7

Lupus: ~A medium-sized gray wolf prowls through the brush. His fur is a light gray peppered with black and white streaks. The lupine commands all the fluid grace of a carnal, primeval predator. The golden-brown eyes glow with animal cunning and the ears flicker to every keen sound. Qu is ready to let loose the howls of the night.~

OOC: Appearance 3; Pure Breed 2; Glory 5, Virtue 6, Wisdom 7

Music can sooth the savage beast. I promise you, my friend."

History

Youth

Qu was brought into this world on a joyous evening of music and laughter. And so he was aptly named, his name meaning “song”. His mother, Yu Ti-fa was Trueborn, a New Moon Child of Gaia in the Court of the Forest Stars located in the southern fields and forests and in a Buddhist monastery of the Qinghai Province of China. Ti-fa was married to an honest and gentle man (who was Kin), Yu Wang. They lived together in the village of Yosi, which neighbored the forested bawn of the Court. Many of their relatives dwelled in Yosi, too. Though Qu never had siblings, he had many childhood friends, and eventually began to spend a lot of time with his first cousin, a pretty and gentle girl named Sai.

His family raised Qu in the strong beliefs of the Dadi Ertong. The Xing Kanmengou oracles had predicted he would likely Change one day, so Qu was taught from an early age all there was to know about Garou and hengeyokai society. He learned about the Beast-Courts, about the Emerald Mother, and about the fight against corruption and wickedness. Qu was taught the mission of the Children of Gaia: to bring all peoples into the light and love of the world instead of giving into bitter hate, rage, and misery.

And it was as if Qu was born into his gibbous auspice. From youth, the fair boy expressed a keen interest for music, song, and sound. He chanted with the Stargazer monks, sung folk tunes and ballads with the village craftsmen, and listened intently to the cacophony of his lupine brethren’s howls when he snuck into their hallowed moots. He even began to sing along with imported Western rock music: he liked Elvis and Billy Idol especially. And better yet, Qu demonstrated talent. At least that made his penchant to sing more than bearable!

First Change & Tutelage

And the day came that Qu finally did Change. It was not a Rage-prompted shapeshifting at all. But passion did inspire Qu to finally discover his true identity. He was twelve and listening to the moot in the nearby woods as usual, hidden in the brush. He closed his eyes, smiling dreamily, wanting to raise his voice in that primal ululation so badly… And moments later, he was. He found himself becoming a werewolf, and he embraced it entirely. He had been prepared for it his whole life and the howling songs channeling his initial inner turmoil into a beautiful call. It was a call that brought his brethren to his place in the woods and he was taken before the Court Council. There his indoctrination into Beast-Court began properly and he spent the next year learning all of the noble ways. He also learned to tame the Beast Within and vigorously sought to impress his elders.

During this time, he began to distance himself from most of his childhood friends. He feared that the Rage within might consume him while he was still so young and inexperienced. The Curse was taunting the cub even then. The only friend that would not let him push away, nor did he push hard, was young Sai. The two year-younger Kinfolk girl stayed with him as a true friend for the next few years. And he needed her friendship to lean on as his Rite of Passage neared.

Qu was thirteen when his Rite of the Opened Way’s tests were administered. His mother who had served as his primary sifu since his First Change (and most of his life) agreed to accompany the boy on the quest. The Court Elders instructed him to go to Tibet and return with a trophy representing his defeat of one Wyrm-corrupted enemy. With his mother watching from a safe distance, Qu traveled west to Tibet. He walked among general humanity there, and eventually came across a village that the Chinese oppressed named Pah. The occupying soldiers were cold and cruel to the Tibetan inhabitants. Qu saw this and felt their suffering and barely contained outrage. It almost rose up in him, but he turned again to that channel of his rage. Qu did his best to bring good cheer to Pah through his talented musical performances. While it was hardly enough to quell the exchanged hatreds, it had enough of a pacifying effect that a Yomi demon that was preying off of that fear and violence grew angry. The demon appeared before Qu and cursed the werewolf cub for his meddling, then attacked viciously. Qu stayed cool, dancing away and around the outraged Bane, making it madder and more foolish. At last, when the monster was literally drooling and frothing, Qu sprung into Crinos. Claws shredded the demon’s scaly flesh. Its venomous bite weakened the cub, and he crawled from Pah. He might have died, but his mother found him when the demon’s stiff man in his paw. She healed him and brought him to his senses. Together, Ti-fa and Qu returned to Yosi and the Court of the Forest Stars. With the trophy and Ti-fa’s account, Qu was given his Wood Badge and made a full member of the Beast-Courts thereafter.

Early Years

Qu served the Court faithfully well for the next five years. As a Court bard, Qu embraced his appointed duty as Assistant Tale-Weaver. He spent this time excelling in his talents, bringing more beauty and musical wealth to what was often an ascetically sterile Court. Qu tapped ancient songs and refreshed the environment with newer music. Meanwhile, his relationship with Sai deepened, facing no discouragement from his brethren or family. Qu and Sai worked together to enrich Yosi’s culture and soon they began to fall in love despite their blood relation. The only possible thorn between the pair was Qu’s insistence to accompany the Court’s warriors into battle when necessary. He felt it was his duty as a Moon-dancer (and his hunting howls were indeed inspiring). Sai felt he was needlessly risking his life. But she never stood in his way; she and Qu were falling in love.

Patience paid off well for Qu. His years of faithful duty and his immersing attitude into the life of the hengeyokai served him well. The many deeds performed for the Forest Stars overwhelmed the minor missteps an adolescent Garou would invariably make. He was ready to test for his Iron Badge. So Qu challenged Fu Lion’s Paw, a Stargazer Judge of the Steel Rank. The Half-Moon opted for a test in the “stare-down” series. According to the Xing Kanmengou, all hengeyokai should seek balance between their talents and desires and duties and discipline. Qu was to sit in meditation position in the middle of the monastery for three hours. He was to remain still and expressionless for the duration. And while Qu did this, the monastery’s normal daily routine took place. Noise and distraction, particularly the monk’s regular chanting, stirred the young Galliard’s passionate soul. And near the end of the three hour stretch, the monks played some Western rock music -- expressly for the purpose of Qu’s test. Although tempted to smile at the monks’ attempts to distract him -- indeed, seriously tempted to break out in song -- Qu stayed still and silent. He thus proved that he could focus his passions maturely. Fu Lion’s Paw pronounced Qu worthy and the Elders awarded the Dadi Ertong his Iron Badge.

Recent Years

So empowered, Qu pondered how to next spend his life and career. Though he could stay at the Forest Stars as a welcome and more useful-than-ever member of the Court, Qu’s youth yearned for more. He wanted to see more of the world. Furthermore, in spite of his constant musical inspiration, he had not received any sort of personal vision to show him how he should best serve the Emerald Mother. He spoke with Sai and the pair decided that perhaps they should wander together. Then rumors began to trickle in from the Court’s Tengu about a strange and heretofore unknown anomaly in Little Asia of Kansas City, America. A multi-shen Coalition of Courts was formed. Qu and Sai were determined to investigate this rumor, and they said good-bye to their families, friends, and brethren. Once they ascertained the rumor's veracity, they planned to join and study this Coalition -- for it was surely a great step for the diplomacy between Heaven’s servants. And more importantly, it was a bright new chance for peace in this hate-torn world.

Past Life

Qu has little connection to his ancestors. But sometimes, when he meditates long enough, he slips into a semi-conscious dream state where he can get in touch with a couple vague past lives. One was a Ragabash from the 19th century named O Swampluck, renowned for his ability to bring shame to those Garou badly in need of being shamed. The other was a Philodox named Dei Wan Ironfist, a master of kung fu and the ender of debates as far as Children of Gaia in combat are concerned. He apparently studied under Stargazers and was quite able to enforce peace and mediation when berserkers wanted none of it. Unfortunately, Qu can only get vague glimpses of both these werewolves’ lives, and so far he just uses what he can see as means by which to balance his own life. The way of strictness, of the judge and warrior, contrasted by the way of the happy-go-lucky prankster, can surely help a Galliard live properly.

Significant Other

As cousins in the same village and Sept back in China, Qu and Sai have known each other since young childhood. And since early adolescence, the two have been in love. Sure, they’re cousins. But this is the Garou, and incest of this sort is not at all uncommon. The Child of Gaia absolutely adores Sai. They’ve already had a young son, which they named Haohan and he was born in the summer of 2004, on July 28th. The two were married in Garou custom soon after childbirth. Now Qu and Sai have their future to look forward to together: happiness in spite of the war that Qu cannot neglect, and a growing family with more children to come.

Then to everyone's surprise, Sai First Changed. A late-bloomer, such things happened. It definitely threw a wrench in their romance, given their long if already inappropriately incestuous love affair. Qu and Sai maintain their love with one another, but are careful not to have anymore children, who would be born metis.

Sai

Weakness
Peacenik Syndrome

Like many Children of Gaia, Qu is staunchly against infighting. While this is a good thing, he tends to turn the focus of any discussion of war away from the real enemy. Idealistic, he doesn't realize that people can't be forced to embrace peace and love and so long as there is war and hate, the Wyrm will thrive. In a way, like all Garou, he is just as hopeless -- he's just hopeless in a less aggressive manner.

Likelihood of Corruption

Average.

There is such a thing as being "too open-minded". And again, like many other Children of Gaia, that may be Qu's greatest flaw. Being accepting of many truths and ideas can and often does deteriorate one's own beliefs and certainty. This tends to keep one's mind open to all sorts of ideas...and many ideas are wicked indeed. Only until he has found something truly good to stand his ground upon may he find greater peace from the moral labyrinth in which many modern "liberals" find themselves.
